One thing the charts don't tell you are the practical issues surrounding the use of a 36 mega-pixel camera at a wedding. Let's suppose you shoot 800 images - rather a lot, but some do. You now face the problem of backing them up. A 4 GB DVD will just about hold between 35 and 40 images at 108MB. In other words the same as an old-fashioned roll of 35mm film.
However, if you get carried away and shoot 800 images you are faced with the prospect of needing 20 DVDs per wedding, tracking, collating, labelling and storing them (and did we mention our liking of duplicate back-ups?). Suddenly this is a massive logistical problem; Drobo and the other NAS-providers must be rubbing their hands in anticipation! Similar issues revolve around your CompactFlash cards. The issue is that you need big ones but the D800 and D4 have different slotting arrangements, making sharing between you and a second shooter a potential problem. Also you probably have to think about shooting either all JPEG or simultaneous JPEG and RAW so that you have readily available images for fast-building a slide show at the reception (if that is what you do).
Considering all this you have to factor in the costs of additional storage both computing and physical, extra card readers for faster downloads and faster DVD writers to make life with big chips bearable.
Canon
Life for Canon owners is a little easier. They announced the Canon EOS 5D Mk III just before Focus along with the 'pre-Olympic' speed merchant, the EOS IDX, just before Christmas last year. The choices are similar except that there is no massive pixel count camera to worry about and the 5D Mk III is only a minor increase to the pixel count of its predecessor. The 5D Mk III does bring many of the features of the new EOS 1D X, although it is one stop short on ultimate ISO setting with a top end of 102,400. For the first time in a Canon DSLR built-in HDR is provided.
