At the other end of the scale, but still holding appeal for pros wanting a portable back-up camera, are the latest compact system cameras (CSC).

In aiming to offer the best options in terms of quality kit, Guy works closely with manufacturers to ensure that he has the latest gear at launch.

HireaCamera.com holds stock of the Sony NEX range including the newest NEX-6, and also every E-mount system lens from not only Sony but also Sigma (and will be stocking the new Zeiss AF range early next year). It also stocks the Panasonic Lumix G family including the newest GH3, the Olympus OM-D plus the flagship Fuji X-Pro1 and X-E1, the latter pitched as the more affordable version of the former.

"The people who hire the CSCs from us are an interesting mix. You've got high-end pros who can't be bothered to take their big kit with them all the time, but also those using them at home who want to supplement the kit lens that they've got with something more expensive. The biggest growth area at the moment within interchangeable lens cameras is compact systems and that's only going to rise. As the market increases on the sales side, so does the hire. We're getting the pros wanting to try them as well, because they want to see whether the CSCs are all they're cracked up to be." Rental Health

In terms of kit that might be of obvious hire value to SWPP members, there are the four main camera releases of 2012; namely the Canon EOS 1DX, 5D Mark III, Nikon D4 and D800.

When we spoke late October, HireaCamera.com was also expecting delivery of the EOS 6D and had just got the D600 in.

"We've got a lot of orders for the 6D because photographers who own the original 5D and never upgraded to the Mark II - and then were scared off by the price of the Mark III - are very interested in trying it," Guy Thatcher reasons. "It's not uncomfortably expensive in the same way as the 5D Mark III is.

Having said that the Mark III has also been great for our business because so many people have wanted to try it before putting their hand in their pocket. Some have kept their Mark II and chosen to hire a Mark III as and when they need it for low light or to focus a damn site quicker."

If you're wondering about an average rental cost via HireaCamera.com, then you'll be interested to know that a weekend's hire cost for a 5D Mark III will set you back £190.
