Congratulations to Anita Hummel on the image. Anita from Bristol, England has won 6 months membership to The Society of International Commercial and Industrial Photographers.
''The image was taken in the Mausoleum of Mohamed V
in Rabat (the Capital of Morocco),which is located in the Yacoub Al Mansour
Square, 30-05-2015.
It's an image of the intricately carved ceilling in the last resting place of
Mohammed V. Over 400 artisans were commissioned to produce this wonderful work.
I arrived there in the evening, around sunset. It was already getting quite dark
indoors. If I wanted to take any meaningful pictures I needed to shoot a long
exposure, and due to the intricate nature of the carving, it couldn't be grainy.
I chose to shoot at the highest possible quality on my Nikon D700. To stabilise
the camera I supported it on a railing with a lens cap for a 4second exposure at
f6.3 at 70mm, ISO 200 (on an rather aged Nikon 35-70mm, f2.8- no flash). The
image was actually brighter than what was visible to the human eye at the time
and it really brought out the beautiful craftmenship and the intricate carving
and colours in the stained glass. Shooting around sundown allowed for a good
balance between the indoor and outdoor lighting and helped to bring out
intensity and the beautiful colours. The only adjustments on the final image
were contrast brightness and a bit of vibrance.
On seeing this splendour (while listening to the perfect recitation of the
Q'uran) I thought "beauty is not (only) in the eye of the beholder, but also it
is in the heart and vision of the artisan who work their vision with skill so we
can appreciate "beauty".''
