My company mission statement is 'Creating the Impossible' and shooting this way is often how I achieve this.
So where do we start?
As daft as it may sound...with a long hard look at the product.
I move a light around in the dark studio to see what shapes and textures appear, a scenario I use on everything I shoot, even models! It is called 'the art of seeing'. Sorry that isn't me being pretentious but I see some photographers erecting lights before they have even seen the subject - it never ceases to amaze me. Work in the dark and move your light...
you will be amazed at what you see. After 25 years I still do this every time I shoot anything. I am always pleasantly surprised and this simple technique still pays dividends.
Once you have perused your product it is time to make notes (I said you had to be organised and methodical)! Draw a diagram of the product (or take a snap of it) and with coloured markers sketch around it where you would like the light to hit. Number each area as this will be your 'lighting by numbers' bible... miss one and you will have to start from the beginning again !!
So what next?
Set up your product, clean and dust it to within an inch of its life (boring but imperative)! As you will be working in near dark conditions, ensure your floor area is free from clutter (again, boring but imperative).
