THE POWER OF PERSPECTIVE
People say that you shouldn't shoot portraiture on a wide angle, which in many situations is a good rule of thumb to observe. However, if you know how a wide angle lens behaves and you want to use that to your advantage, it can be a very effective creative tool. In this case I shot using a 12mm lens - which is a 24mm equivalent in 35mm, full-frame terms - because I deliberately wanted to exploit the distortion and impact to create drama in the picture, and enhance the comedic value of what we were doing.
It's just one of those things in photography where you have to know the rules before you decide to break them. If you're going to break rules, make sure you're consciously doing it for a specific purpose rather than just doing it by accident because you don't know any better!
Finally, by using a slow speed to pick up the ambient illumination, the shutter is giving us a certain quality of movement within the imagery and the squirty sauce - but when the flash goes off it records it sharp and hard, giving us the best of both worlds.
Hopefully that's given you a little bit of insight into what we get up to on a BIG Shoot Experience, and why I think it's something that every photographer should look to get in on to develop their photography. I honestly wish that something like this was available to me when I was teaching myself how to take pictures - to have the opportunity to learn and build your portfolio on a commercial shoot really is nothing to be sniffed at.
And again, all credit to Olympus for not only welcoming users of all types of camera; by subsidising each event, we're able to offer places for just £145 per person. They take place up and down the country (we've just come back from shooting on a 14-acre lakeside estate in Leicestershire) and in September we're even taking the BIG Shoot to abroad as well as a domestic date, so if you'd like to get involved then head over to www.damianmcgillicuddy.com and join us on the next one!
So I'll end by sharing a few more images from the shoot for your entertainment and wish you all the best for your upcoming shoots. 'Till next time,
McGillicuddy
