He eventually managed to get a place as an assistant at Fleet Illustration Studio in Covent Garden. Because of the location of the studio lots of well-known photographers used it regularly, including Lichfield, Bailey and many others. This enabled Syd to watch and learn from the masters. He had his big break when one of the photographers was ill and Syd was asked to fill in.
From this he started to get more jobs and after three years with a much thicker portfolio, Syd left London for Lancashire where he worked for a catalogue company which again gave him a great deal of experience, but this time in the technical world of Mail-order catalogue photography.
