If you throw in a D700 body with an MB D10 battery pack then the weight of the set totals a few grams under 5kg. This is quite a weight to carry on a casual basis and if you are a wedding photographer you may have to add a couple of flash guns and a spare body to your load. The 14-24mm is a bit of a luxury for weddings; it will get some nice sweeping expansive views of locations and large groups of guests but keep it well away from people, it rarely flatters!

The original 70-200 VR Mk I is soft at the edges although this is not deletectable in shots such as that on the RIGHT.

There are a number of ways of skinning the wedding cat and ranging 14mm to 200mm might not be the choice of everybody. A lighter option would be to forego the zooms, use a 28mm, 50mm and 85mm prime lens set, and walk about a bit more - the cheapest zoom is your feet. Eventually though this approach will require compromise, weddings often leave the photographer backed up against a wall with no more space to play with.

The danger which now confronts the new starter is vacillating between options; at least our perfect storm trio removes that from the equation providing you can a) carry it all and b) afford the six grand.
