The data shows that CF cards cost about twice as much as SDXC cards and that the faster Extreme Pro cards are more expensive than the Extreme.
There is a hefty premium for the speed of the CFlash 2 cards, although the tripling of speed only commands a doubling of net storage cost. Whether you need to shell out for additional speed depends upon your camera and usage. The 4k video, for example, is very demanding; if you shoot stills in the studio, in limited numbers, almost any speed will suffice.
For time lapse and video you might require the highest capacity cards to avoid having to change cards mid-flow, or perhaps when a camera is remote - on say a building site, or if extreme weather in involved. For trail, trap-camera work you might not be able to approach the camera for safety or animal disturbance reasons and so higher capacity is always a boon.
Card Nomenclature and Markings
The quest at the outset of this feature was part of our star trail adventures.
Here did run into trouble with write speeds (along with an incorrectly set up camera!) but you need to now how long you camera takes to write to the card so that you don't end up filling your buffer and stalling a time lapse or interval shoot. As an aside to this you also need to ensure that you have enough battery capacity for your camera in these circumstances, including a recognition of the fact that low temperatures severely reduce your battery capacity.
Memory Cards Past, Present and Future
Memory cards have tracked the development of Solid State Devices (SSDs) all along the way. In 2014 SanDisk announced a 512GB SD card at photokina and at the time this was the largest capacity available. At photokina 2016, SanDisk demonstrated a protoype 1TB SD card, currently the largest publically available. This is by some way larger than the capacities of many laptop hard drives! At the time of writing the new card had not appeared on SanDisk's website.
