Concurrently with our testing of i1 Display and i1 Publish we were also looking at two monitors provided by NEC. Our quest was to highlight the differences that you might expect to see between these two monitors from either end of the cost spectrum at £330 and £1859. There were the MultiSync 221W and the Reference 271 and their main characteristics are tabled.
Test Methods
We made profiles with i1 Display and then audited the results using BabelColor Display Check using both RGB and CMYK test patches. The RGB test is more stringent as it encompasses a higher gamut, the CMYK testing is more appropriate if the monitor is to be used for pre-press soft proofing and certification. Accordingly we checked out the CMYK tests against the ISO 12646 for both colour accuracy and the evenness of the display. These are stringent tests, there are only a handful of monitors which are graded as Fogra Class A, the Reference 271 and our own Eizo CG243W are two of them. Both passed but more on that later.
