However, most of my product photography is for much smaller items, such as a tin of beans! (I kid you not).

When shooting items of this size or smaller, using studio flash becomes a chore as they are far too big, too powerful and don't have light modifiers suited to such small products.

Speedlights again are not really an option. You would need between four and eight of them (costing more than a set of 'real' studio flash heads).

Lighting set-up for Heinz Beanz shot. Shot with four LED lamps and DIY light modifiers (correlates to lamp Modifiers Image). Lee lighting gels on background lights.

They don't have enough variation in light modifiers and most importantly, they don't have modeling bulbs, so no WYSIWYG!!

For me it has been a journey of discovery over the years and lots (and lots) of trial and error! Finally I can say: I have 'cracked it'!

For the last few years I have been amassing and modifying my own unique 'professional' lighting system.

A set of LED desk lamps (with a grand total of 10 watts of power), and at a total cost of just £100!!!
