The notion of product photography being 'boring' I often find amusing as it is FAR less formulaic than photographing people.
Let's think about this for a moment...
Fat, thin, tall, short.
People may vary to a degree, but in general we are all the same... it is known as evolution. To this end photographing them by its very nature is going to be more formulaic.
Hoover, pen, telephone, screwdriver.
Every product has unique features that need careful consideration both in terms of lighting but also as regards perspective, specific colour matching or to show a particular material it may be made from.
I often hear photographers worry about the skill level required to shoot products. To a degree this may be true. However, with careful consideration it needn't be a stumbling block especially now, with new and inexpensive technologies to hand.
Space doesn't even need to be an issue anymore, shooting the way I suggest. Even a box-room or kitchen table will suffice (which isn't an option if you stick with traditional methods).
